Categories of Locks

The high price of an electric bike makes it a certain object of desire. To prevent it from being stolen, there are different locks with different levels of security. Anti-theft cables are the least secure equipment for your e-bike: they can be cut very easily with pliers. On the other hand, they have the advantage of being easily transportable and quick to use.

There are also anti-theft chains. They are safer than cables, as they are more difficult to cut, especially if you opt for a chain with large links. Finally, U-locks or large padlocks are probably the best option, they are almost impossible to cut thanks to their thick shackle.

U-locks are reputed to be the most suitable for electric bikes. We particularly recommend Kryptonite locks, the inventor of this type of lock. A very solid reputable brand, which manufactures the best electric bike locks.

The effectiveness of an electric bike lock also lies in the way it is used. It is advisable to link your e-Bike to a solid fixed point (bike spaces, arches, road signs, lampposts, etc.), attaching the frame of your bike and the wheel first if possible). If your e-bike has an integrated frame lock, its rear wheel will be locked, which provides additional security.

How to choose your lock

The choice of your lock for your electric bike must be made according to your parking spots and the duration of your parking. If you leave your e-bike in a place with little traffic, at high risk of theft, it is recommended to favor an effective bike lock such as a large padlock or a U. More resistant than the other models, they were originally designed for motorcycles and scooters. Coupled with another type of lock, such as a chain or a cable, this solution is the most secure for your electric bike.

For parking at home, it is possible to install a fixing anchor, to be fixed indoors or outdoors. This installation is recommended for residential use in a bike room or at home (cellar, garage, etc.). It is installed permanently in cement, on the ground or on the wall. It is then used with a U-lock, an anti-theft chain or a cable.

On the other hand, if you only use your electric bike for extra shopping, in a busy place, and you park it for a short time, an anti-theft cable may be sufficient and will be more practical to use.
